In construction, a niche can be described as a shallow recess in a wall. The word originates from the French and translates to literally mean “recess.” We build with niches often when we work with bathrooms and showers. A current shower trend utilizes niches to create extra built-in storage to hold the assorted bottles of bathing toiletries. 

We are especially fond of incorporating waterproof niches in our clients’ showers as they are both functional and beautiful form of storage. Add a little design detail with custom tile or lighting and suddenly your niche is a bathroom feature. Here are a few recommendations on size and placement for your niche.

  1. SIZE

    12x24 is a good size for a niche. This allows the niche to fit between the studs. You can either leave it open or add a shelf at 12 inches to give you two shelves.

  2. PLACEMENT

    Ideal niche height should hit at your chest - when you’re in the shower you want to be looking straight across when you grab for your shampoo. If you have to look down its very easy for something to drip into your eyes.

  3. ONE OR TWO

    If you and your spouse share a shower, we highly recommend 2 separate niches. We have many clients who believe having your own sink or shower niche are helpful tools to a strong marriage. We tend to agree with them.

  4. MAKE IT FUN

    Add some personality by playing with the placement, installing lighting, using funky tile or a combination of all 3.
