Combining a Rustic Feel with Modern Style
At Salt Point Services, we love to remodel with a modern flair and the highest quality. However, we equally enjoy the challenge of preserving the rustic nostalgia of a house’s original design. Oftentimes, our remodeling projects require us to strike this balance—maintaining the charm of the original and improving it with the Salt Point craftsmanship.
We recently faced this balance when one of our clients moved into their dream farmhouse and asked us to remodel their bathroom. The farmhouse bathroom already featured beautiful views of the surrounding hills and captured the warmth of the countryside. So rather than entirely modernize the room, we worked along with our clients friend and the room’s designer, Diane V. Finnegan, to emphasize its strongest points and keep the integrity of its original shape. By keeping the original walls, the bathroom’s open, spacious, and rustic feel was maintained and called even more attention to the scenic outdoor views.
To focus on the picturesque overlook, the room’s vanity was moved underneath the large windows. The vanity’s mirrors would have obstructed the windows, Diane had to seek a creative solution. By suspending the large oval mirrors in the room’s corners, the view is now framed like a painting, celebrating the natural beauty of the surroundings without losing the function of a space to prepare for your day.
Diane used another creative solution to strike the rustic/modern balance in the flooring. To conserve the warmth of the farmhouse, we installed heated flooring with a unique patterned tile reminiscent of the original feel, but updated with wonderful, cozy technology. In the shower, things were kept rustic by using wood-mimicking tiles accented by pebble tile inlays. These little details go a long way in creating a modern, professional bathroom, yet remaining timeless.
A very modern feature was the clients choice of toilet. This toilet, the Toto Neorest®, has all the luxuries one could dream of in a toilet.
